Charlie Chan is a fictional Chinese American detective who was a sergeant who later got promoted at the Honolulu Police Department. This character was created by Earl Derr Biggers and had a wife with fourteen children. Charlie Chan first appeared in novels written by Earl Derr Biggers that were published from 1925 to 1932. These books were later adapted to film but the first two films, The House Without a Key (1925) and The Chinese Parrot (1926) were both lost and so cannot be found in the Charlie Chan DVD collection.

Warner Oland, Sidney Toler, Roland Winters and Peter Ustinov have all played the character of Charlie Chan. DVD collections of his films comprise of films starring these actors. Warner Oland starred in sixteen movies from 1931 - 1938; some titles being: The Black Camel (1931), Charlie Chan in London (1934), Charlie Chan at the Circus (1936) and Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo (1938). After this period, 20th Century Fox came into existence and produced 11 more films starring Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan. DVD copies of these films can also be found in the Charlie Chan DVD collection. In 1944, Toler bought the screen rights and Monogram Pictures made 11 films starring Toler and 6 starring Roland Winters.

The Great Charlie Chan Detective Mystery Game was developed in 1937 and the Charlie Chan Card Game in 1939. Over the years, a number of Charlie Chan comic books were published and two off-beat films were released. The Return of Charlie Chan in 1973 was considered unengaging while Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen which was released in 1981 is not seen as a comic success. However, fans of this character will appreciate the Charlie Chan DVD collection because Charlie Chan exhibited many honourable traits.
